(By Richard Holway 10.00pm 3rd March 09) The tragic death of Rob Williams when he fell 60ft off a cliff in a white out in Verbier - see http://tinyurl.com/cbog3w - actually illustrates some of the benefits of modern technology. Friends were able to locate his companion from the GPS positioning on his iPhone. They used Twitter to get the mobile phone numbers of the rest of the party so they could determine who else was missing. They both alerted the rescue teams and kept everyone informed of progress via Twitter.
Many people have said that Twitter really comes into its own in a disaster - like the Mumbai atrocities. I can see that in one way. But there is also a worrying voyeuristic side to all this. Like rubber necking at a car crash.
