So guess who is the winner in the Microsoft Yahoo deal?

(By Richard Holway 4.00pm Sunday 2nd August 09) As expected the weekend press is full of reviews of the Microsoft/Yahoo deal. I recommend Microsoft’s sweet Yahoo deal to take on Google in the Sunday Times. They all seem to agree with our initial and subsequent reactions. (To reread see – Microsoft + Yahoo at last and Yahoo + Microsoft "Nobody gets it".) Ie that this was a mighty good deal for Microsoft and bit of a ‘disappointment’ ( I could have used more colourful language) for Yahoo. Carol Bartz is accused of selling Yahoo’s ‘crown jewels’ for ‘a song’. “So negative was the reaction that Microsoft’s boss, Steve Ballmer, felt the need to come out and say what a good deal it was for Yahoo.”

Well, I tell you, the last thing you want is Ballmer saying that kind of thing. He’s always come over to me as a guy who revels in winning and has little sympathy for ‘the other guy’. As Jeffrey Lindsay, analyst at Sanford Bernstein, said of Ballmer’s performance last week “Buying yourself 20% of the US search advertising market for, say, $4.5 billion is a hell of a day’s work.”

And there are many who suspect the deal won’t have even cost Microsoft that much…
